Did you ever think you were the only person with hearing loss?

Casacusia was born to show you that many of us go through it. We seek to transform how each one of us relates to their hearing loss, so we can live better.

What is hearing loss?

Hearing loss is the total or partial decrease in hearing capacity. It can be unilateral or bilateral; mild, moderate, severe or profound. The WHO classifies it as an invisible disability.

  • 1 in 20

People in the world have some degree of hearing loss.

  • +2 million

  • 700M

WHO projection towards 2050 with disabling hearing loss.

Why we do what we do

Living, not just surviving

  1. 1

We all deserve a full life, connected with other people and being part of something.

  2. 2

And to do that, we have to ask: ask for things to be repeated, ask to switch sides, ask people to make adaptations. Asking is hard. And sometimes it pushes us away from others.

  3. 3

By not asking and by not hearing —because not hearing means not being fully present— we start to isolate ourselves to avoid the frustration. We stop asking, and therefore, stop being there.

  4. 4

We drift from people, from partners, from friends. We give up sports, theater, family movies. We stop going out, we stop socializing. And life in isolation isn't the most beautiful life.

Part of the need is the lack of community. People talk about two extremes: hearing well or hearing nothing, but there's a huge spectrum in between. Mostly made up of people who lose their hearing suddenly and families whose children are born deaf. Can you imagine it happening to you?

A need that was not being addressed

Why CASACUSIA exists

A need that was not being addressed

Hearing loss is usually addressed from a medical or technical paradigm: audiometries, devices, surgeries. However, many people not only face hearing barriers, but also isolation, shame, lack of information and few spaces of belonging.

That impacts mental health, socialization, education and employment. Many people go through their process in solitude. CASACUSIA exists to respond to that gap.

In the meetups we realized that

hearing louder doesn't mean you live better.

And that we didn't want to work for the ears, but for the people. We realized that disability can't be cured.

Mission

Transform the relationship of people with their hearing loss, to improve their quality of life.

We don't aim to restore hearing. We aim to bring peace, ease processes, bring hope. Be a light.

Vision

To be an inspiring movement that accompanies and empowers people with hearing loss, promoting a more conscious and supportive society.
